Brian McClorry SJ about to leave St Beuno's

Roger Dawson SJ, Director of St Beuno's, gives an update on recent developments, both human and ecological...

Two team members left St Beuno’s at the end of August.  Fr Brian McClorry SJ has been at St Beuno's for over ten years and has been a wise and amiable director and presence for so many people over this time.  He has worked in Ignatian spirituality here and in Scotland for many years and is now going to ‘reboot’ and will be Chaplain to the Jesuit Refugee Service in London.

We are very sad to say goodbye to Brian McClorry who is leaving St Beuno's to inflict his wonderfully capacious and poetic imagination and generally excellent presence on the Jesuit Refugee Service in London. We will miss you.

Ruth Holgate has been Deputy Director here for the last three years, having been Director of Loyola Hall and of the Ignatian Spirituality Centre, Glasgow.  She has immense experience of retreat work and running retreat houses and has been a huge help to me over the last few years.  She will be going to London to work with the Jesuits in the new young adult ministry project.  They both leave here with our gratitude and prayers for their future work.

In the last newsletter we told you about the work on the woodlands.  Much work was done at the beginning of July using an extraordinary machine that looked like a beast from Jurassic Park (it was capable of reducing a medium sized tree to a pile of 8 foot logs in about a minute and a half!)  The work was not nearly as noisy or as disruptive as we feared, and we now have a wonderful glade in the woods to the right of the house.  This is part of a five-year plan to get the woods into woodland management and improve the biodiversity, as well as enhancing the gardens, and there is more work to do, but nearly all the feedback so far has been very positive.

Finally, at the last Friends’ Weekend a number of Friends said that they would be interested in helping to fund the proposed prayer room on the top terrace.  I have asked our architect, Rob Chambers, to draw up a design for this and once we have costed plans we will let you know more.

Thank you for all your support and prayers.  You are remembered in ours!
