... in "I wish it could be Christmas every day"

Christmas cards with good wishes

The song "I wish it could be Christmas every day" came on the radio when I was in a taxi the other day, and I immediately snapped, 'No I don't! That would be awful!" Awful because it wouldn't be special if it was every day of course, and the hectic period just before Christmas can get a bit much! The taxi driver said he couldn't wait for it to all be over, which surprised me, until it turned out that he was working 10 days in a row with only one day off, working Christmas and New Year and had spent 6 hours on his last day off Christmas shopping with his wife!

I'm a wee bit sentimental... when I go travel past other people's houses in a car or a bus and I see the windows all lit up by the lights of the Christmas tree inside, I feel warm inside thinking of the idea that everyone is experiencing a traditional, cosy Christmas inside. The lights inside the houses are one of my favourite things about the time of year, which seems to drive out some of the darkness in human beings. Of course this external appearance is not necessarily matched by reality. For some the warmth of Christmas feeling may really extend to the lights on the tree but not much beyond that, and Christmas may descend into arguments. That's for those lucky enough to even have a family to argue with. Some don't have anyone to spend Christmas with. Nonetheless, when I think about it, this is a time when people extend greetings to each other, send best wishes, exchange news, celebrate friendships, socialise with colleagues, spend time with family, give gifts. All of that is beautiful. For the most part, glossing over some of the darker sides of the season, it would be great if we could do some of these things more often, if not every day.
